Mobile Websites
Mar8

As more and more people get smartphones the amount of web content that is view on a mobile phone has increased. The good news is that your current website is viewable on a mobile device. However, the website might look different on a mobile phone or be harder to navigate. Idealware posted an article last week about building websites for mobile devices.

Before you consider building a mobile version of your webpage it’s important to find out if a lot of people are viewing your website from their phones. If most people are checking your website from their computers, it doesn't pay to invest a lot of time or money into building another website. Your website will work just fine as is. And if you want to make a few, quick tweaks to your current website to make it more mobile friendly, I have some tips.

If a large portions of your base does view your website from their mobile devices you should consider building a mobile version of your webpage or at a minimum make some of these changes.

When you are looking at making changes to your current website you have to think about the screen size difference between a monitor and a mobile device. A mobile device gives you a small viewing area. So you have to put the information that is most important on the upper, left hand portion of your webpage to prevent mobile users from getting frustrated when they have to scroll around to find what they are looking for.

Another thing to consider is that when a person views your website from their mobile phone they are probably looking for specific information and not just reading up on your organization. More than likely they are looking for an address, phone number or specific information about you or an upcoming event. To make viewing your website easier for these people put this information in an easily accessible place that does not require too much scrolling or clicking.

Idealware suggested this website and I found the information very useful:

How can groups find out how
March 17, 2010

How can groups find out how many people are viewing their websites on mobile devices?  Also, are there any guidelines about the different browsers used on smartphones and how much, if any, of the design of your website for mobile devices has to consider different browsers?

Originally when I posted this, I was hoping that the groups would talk with their members or conduct a survey to see if a high percentage of their users were accessing the website from a mobile device. Also, if the members were having problems, I was hoping that they would report the issues. However, I did some research and you can track mobile device hits in Google Analytics.

There are a lot of browsers that work from mobile devices. You can see a full list here, but to summarize:

Blackberrys use- Blackberry Browser

iPhones use- Safari

Palms use- WebOS or Blazer

Androids use- Google Browser

Basically, in recent years almost all web browsers have developed software for mobile devices.
